Simon Hall Will Writing & Estate Planning Services

From a formal lawyer’s office to your comfy living room: Stephanie Bennett is on a mission to make Will Writing more personal

Stephanie Bennett Will Writer in Plymouth

After more than ten years working in traditional law firms, Stephanie Bennett made a bold career change following a personal turning point. Now, as a Will Writer with Simon Hall Will Writing Services, she brings a more relaxed, but professional approach to Estate Planning – meeting clients in their homes or online. In this interview with Al Gibson, she reflects on her journey from formal offices to friendly, down-to-earth conversations.

Al: Congratulations on your new role with Simon Hall Will Writing Services, covering Plymouth and surrounding areas. Tell us a little bit about yourself?

Stephanie Bennett: I’ve worked in the legal sector for 13 years, initially starting out in reception and admin roles, and working my way up to become a Will and Probate specialist. I’ve worked for law firms in Tavistock, Liskeard, Callington and Looe, who helped train me up. Eventually, I began taking on my clients and running my own cases in both Devon and Cornwall.

Al: What inspired the move from working in traditional law firms to becoming a Will Writer with Simon Hall?

Stephanie Bennett: My personal circumstances played a big part. My husband was involved in a serious motorbike accident a few years ago, and it forced us to reassess a lot. I was juggling the demands of a high-pressure legal role, caring for him, and raising our daughter. It just became too much. I wanted something that allowed more flexibility around family life, but still used my legal experience. Will Writing was the perfect fit and Simon Hall offered a way to do it in a more relaxed and meaningful way.

Al: So one doesn’t necessarily have to go to a solicitor to get the best Will?

Stephanie Bennett: Not at all. That’s actually one of the biggest misconceptions people have. A lot of my friends were surprised when I started this role. They thought you had to go to a law firm to get “a proper Will”. But the truth is, you can get the same level of legal protection and even more personal service through a professional Will Writing service like ours.

With Simon Hall Will Writing Services, I’m able to spend real time with clients, whether in their own home or over a cup of tea and talk things through in a way that’s relaxed and easy to understand. No jargon, no pressure, just honest conversations about what matters most. It’s about giving people confidence and clarity, without the clinical feel of a traditional legal setting.

Al: So, how does Simon Hall’s approach differ from the law firm experience?

Stephanie Bennett: It’s night and day, honestly. Traditional firms are fantastic for many things, but they can feel a bit clinical when it comes to protecting your family’s future. You’re often on the clock, in a boardroom and ticking boxes. At Simon Hall, the focus is on client care and building relationships. I can go into people’s homes and talk things through at their pace. It’s a much more personal experience. Clients are often nervous, and I love being able to reassure them and help make the process less daunting.

Al: Why do you think people are so nervous about making a Will?

Stephanie Bennett: There’s still a lot of stigma around talking about death. Many people feel like if they write a Will, it somehow brings that moment closer. But it’s not about planning for your death, it’s about protecting everything you’ve worked hard for, and ensuring it goes to the right people. It’s a proactive, empowering thing to do. Once people understand that, they usually feel a lot better.

AG: What do you think sets you apart in your role?

Stephanie Bennett: I’d say it’s my ability to make people feel comfortable and understood. I genuinely care. I’ve been through tough experiences, so I know how emotional these conversations can be. My approach is relaxed, friendly and I always explain everything in plain English. No legal jargon, no pressure, just practical, heartfelt guidance.

Al: Whereabouts are you based?

Stephanie Bennett: I live just over the Cornwall border in Callington, but I cover Plymouth, Tavistock, and Yelverton, and the surrounding areas. I can meet clients in their homes or online, whatever suits them best.

Your Will should evolve as your life does – Stephanie Bennett

Al: What kind of life events should prompt someone to make or update their Will?

Stephanie Bennett: That’s a great question. I always say that any major life change is a good time to review your Will,  whether that’s getting married, having children, buying a property, going through a divorce, or even receiving an inheritance. It’s not a one-and-done document; it should evolve as your life does.

Al: What’s something people often misunderstand about Wills?

Stephanie Bennett: As I already saids, a big one is thinking you have to go to a solicitor. You don’t. As long as you work with a trained, professional Will Writer, someone who understands the legal requirements, your Will is just as valid. What matters is getting sound advice and ensuring it’s tailored to your personal situation.

Another misconception is about blended families, where people have children from previous relationships. That can make Estate Planning a bit more complex, especially if both partners want to protect their own children’s inheritance. That’s where things like Property Trusts and Tenants in Common come into play. Getting that advice early is key.

Al: What about Lasting Powers of Attorney? When should people think about putting those in place?

Stephanie Bennett: Honestly, the sooner, the better. I recommend considering a LPA when you’re in your 50s or 60s, or when you’re updating your Will. The truth is, capacity can be lost suddenly through illness or accident. LPAs allow someone you trust to step in and make financial or health decisions if you’re no longer able to. Once they’re done and registered, they can sit in a drawer until needed, but having them brings so much peace of mind.

Al: Have you ever dealt with any unusual Will requests?

Stephanie Bennett: I have! People can be quite creative with their funeral wishes. One client wanted their ashes launched into the sky in a firework! Another included very specific instructions for a themed funeral. While those parts aren’t legally binding, it shows how personal a Will can be. I always advise clients to think about how practical those wishes are for their family to carry out.

Al: What’s one part of Will Writing that’s especially close to your heart?

Stephanie Bennett: Guardianship for children. As a mum myself, I know how vital it is to have that written down. It’s one of the most important parts of a Will if you have minor children. People assume grandparents will step in, but you really need to name someone and have that conversation. It gives clarity and it’s a huge weight off your shoulders once it’s done.

One of the most emotional parts of making a Will as a parent is choosing a guardian. It’s something people often put off because it’s such a difficult decision. Your instinct is to choose your parents, but realistically, they may not outlive you. You have to really consider who would love your child unconditionally, who would raise them with the same values and who’s willing to take on that responsibility. It’s not an easy conversation, but it’s absolutely necessary. For me, I chose my brother, he adores my daughter and I know she would thrive with him.

Al: And what about Estate Planning for pets? That’s becoming more common too, isn’t it?

Stephanie Bennett: It is and I’ve worked with clients who want to make sure their pets are properly cared for. In fact, I recently wrote a full blog on Estate Planning for Pet Owners, which includes helpful tips and even options for pet charities.

I myself have two big dogs, Sky and Dave, and they’re part of the family. Just like with children, you have to make sure someone’s there to take care of them if anything happens to you. I always advise my clients to name a trusted friend or family member and even consider leaving a financial gift to help with food, insurance, or vet bills. It just gives everyone peace of mind.

Al: What advice would you give to someone who’s putting off writing their Will?

Stephanie Bennett: Just start the conversation. It doesn’t have to be scary or stressful. Talk to a professional, ask your questions, and take it one step at a time. The peace of mind you get is honestly worth it and your loved ones will thank you for it.

Al: You clearly love what you do. What’s most rewarding about this work for you?

Stephanie Bennett: It’s knowing that I’ve helped someone protect what matters most. When a client finishes an appointment and says, “That wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought,” or “I feel so much better now,” that means the world to me. I know I’ve made a difference.
